Kelly’s International fully accepts its responsibility to minimise the impact that our moving activities may have on the environment.  Management and staff have undertaken to adopt and comply with environmental practices appropriate for the industry, particularly by recycling of packing materials, co-loading of vehicles and taking advantages of economies of scale offered by membership of UniGroup UTS. 

We shall actively promote our environment culture to our customers and suppliers in as much as: 

• Areas in our storage warehouse are allocated to recycling activities
• Employees are regularly briefed in the need for recycling
• We re-use ‘once used’ paper through our fax machine and when printing off non-essential information from computers
• Office waste paper is disposed of in special bins, the contents of which is sent to recycling plant
• Spent ink printer cartridges are collected and sent off for re-use.
• We use controlled logistics planning to assist with economic load co-ordination together with web based traffic co-ordination systems available through the UniGroupUTS organisation.
• We invest in new, fuel efficient goods vehicles with low emissions.  Our latest vehicles have emissions which comply with the latest Euro5 standards.

Letting the Train Take the Strain

Wherever possible our removal surveyors now visit central London properties by train instead of car.  It takes a bit more planning in advance but this policy reduces pollution and traffic in London city.  Additional advantages include reduction in parking costs and congestion charges.  Our surveyors are also able to use laptops on the train which means they can prepare removal quotations whilst traveling; this results in faster response times for our customers.

HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY

This health and safety policy applies to Kelly’s International Ltd at Guildford, Surrey.   

1.  General Policy.

1.1)  Kelly’s International believes that one of its most important functions is the prevention of accidents and ill health.  We do not wish any of our employees, any of the employees of our member companies or any other person to suffer as the result of our activities or work processes.  To this end, we intend to comply rigorously with all health and safety law, Codes of Practice, best guidance and work methods available.

1.2)  The health and safety policy and manuals we have prepared indicate the ways in which Kelly’s intends to meet with legal requirements.

1.3)  Legislation requires that, as an employer, we prepare a statement of general policy with respect to:

a)  The health and safety of our employees, together with details of the organization.

b)  Arrangements that we have set up to carry out that policy. 

1.4)  Therefore, we provide, so far as is reasonably practicable:

a)  Safe systems of working.

b)  Safe plant and equipment.

c)  Safe means of handling and transporting articles, substances and people.

d)  Adequate training, instruction, information and supervision.

e)  Safe place of work with safe access and egress.

f)  Safe and healthy environment.

d)  Adequate welfare facilities.

1.5)  We also ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that the way we carry out our work does not affect the health and safety of persons who are not our employees such as visitors and contractors.

1.6)  It is also recognised that where we produce articles and substances for use at work, or we erect or install any plant or equipment, we have a duty to ensure the health and safety of those who use them and make available all the required information for their health and safety.

1.7)  We remind our employees of their duty to look after their own health and safety and ensure that they do not endanger others and that they must co-operate with us, as their employer, in meeting our legal obligations. 

2.  Health and Safety Statement of Intent.

2.1)  As a vital part of running Kelly’s International as an efficient and successful operation, it is our firm intention to enforce appropriate measures to control and monitor health and safety procedures.

2.2)  Therefore, so as far as is reasonably practicable, Kelly’s International:

a)  Ensures that equipment and working practices are safe and offer no hazard and risk to health and safety.

b)  Ensures that all necessary precautions are taken in respect of the safe use, handling, storage and transport of materials and substances.

c)  Provides such information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure the health and safety at work of all employees.

d)  Maintains all places of work, work equipment and transport under its control in a safe condition, free from risk to health and safety.

e)  Provides adequate facilities for the welfare of employees.

f)  Safeguards the health and safety of visitors, contractors and of any members of the general public who could be affected by its activities.

g)  Provides all necessary information relating to health and safety in respect of procedures and services and, where necessary, consults with employees.

h)  Reviews and updates the policy as and when necessary particularly in respect of major changes within the company and/or changes in legislation and brings these changes to the attention of all employees.

i)  Ensures that all employees are mindful of their health and safety responsibilities and co-operate with the company in its efforts to fulfill the above policy.

j)  Ensures the policy is monitored in the workplace.    

3.  Summary of Employee Responsibilities. 

EMPLOYEES MUST

3.1)  Comply with the Health and Safety Policy. 

3.2)  Observe the safety rules. 

3.3)  Report any safety hazard within their work area or defect in any plant, machinery or equipment to management. 

3.4)  Comply with all written or verbal instructions given to them to ensure their personal safety and the safety of others. 

3.5)  Dress sensibly and safely for their particular working environment or occupation. 

3.6)  Conduct themselves in an orderly manner in the workplace and refrain from any form of horseplay. 

3.7)  Use the safety equipment and/or protective clothing provided. 

3.8)  Avoid improvisation in any form as this may create a risk to their safety and to the safety of others. 

3.9)  Maintain all equipment in good condition and report any defects to management immediately. 

3.10)  Report all accidents to management whether injury is sustained or not. 

3.11)  Attend as requested any training course, meeting etc. designed to further support the interests of health and safety. 

3.12)  Observe the Fire Evacuation Procedure and learn the position of all fire equipment and exit routes and, if trained, attempt to control the fire until the fire service arrives. 

3.13)  Not invite visitors onto the premises without permission from management. 

3.14)  Not consume food or drink except in areas designated for the purpose, nor in areas where there is a risk of contamination. 

3.15)  Comply with the control measures identified in the assessments. 

3.16)  Comply with the requirements outlined and displayed for first aid treatment. 

4.  Personal Protective Equipment. 

4.1)  The Personal Protective Equipment Regulations provide protection for employees in the workplace.  Personal protective equipment (PPE) includes all types of equipment and clothing, which must be used or worn by employees where the identification of hazard(s) and the degree of associated risk necessitate the use of such equipment and clothing.  

4.2)  Employees must use the equipment for its intended use. 

4.3)  Employees must follow all instructions. 

4.4)  Employees must always take care of their PPE.   

Employees should NEVER:

4.5)  Discard PPE when working in an area of risk. 

4.6)  Use if it is not functioning properly. 

4.7)  Use if it has not been properly maintained. 

PPE Equipment

4.8)  Hard Hats to be worn when climbing ladders working under ladders or where there is any risk to head injuries from low beams i.e. metal girders.  Hard hats should be worn when working close to scaffolding or if engaged in window/crane work. 

4.9)  Safety Glasses to be worn at all times when drilling, or disc cutting, and any other areas where there is a danger of splinters or swarf entering the eyes.  

4.10)  Gloves to be worn when pulling cables or handling sheet glass or timber. 

4.11)  Ear Protection to be worn when using generators, ‘Kangoes’, and any other work situation where they have to raise their voice because of the noise generated by the equipment they are using. 

4.12)  Safety Harness must be worn when engaged in crane work or when working at heights. 

4.13)  Wear high visibility vests in warehouse area, when acting as banks-man for reversing trucks, when loading goods close to public roads and other situations of risk as appropriate. 

5.  Manual Handling during Removal Work. 

In the normal day to day work environment, employees come across a lot of tools, furniture and equipment that need to be moved around. The following list lays out some of the things that need to be taken into account before they lift any object:

EMPLOYEES MUST

5.1)  Make sure they have to hand the provided PPE before they start. 

5.2)  Make sure they have a clear exit in the direction they are going. 

5.3)  Make sure they can see clearly, once they have lifted the load. 

5.4)  Always keep the load close to their body. 

5.5)  Have a secure grip; hold with hands, not their fingertips. 

5.6)  Stand close as possible to the load. 

5.7)  Raise their head as they begin to lift. 

5.8)  Use their leg muscles to push themselves up, not their back. 

5.9)  Bend their knees and keep their back straight. 

5.10)  Use their body weight to counter balance. 

5.11)  Use proper manual handling techniques whereby they will reduce fatigue, strain and injury. If they have to strain to lift then do not lift. Use alternative methods i.e. mechanical lifting aids if appropriate, or another person to assist. They should not take risks.

6.  Ladder Safety. 

6.1)  When using ladders employees must always check to ensure that the equipment is fit for use, that the ladder is not damaged in any way, that the rungs are not loose, and the side stiles are not damaged.   

6.2)  Employees must always place the ladder on a firm base; they should not level the ladder on uneven ground unless they are using an approved product to do so. 

6.3)  When erecting a ladder employees should always work on the principle of 4 up 1 out (four foot up, to one foot out).

Ladders Does and Don’ts

6.4)  Employees should always hold the rungs of the ladder when ascending and descending. 

6.5)  Employees should not suspend equipment from the ladder. 

6.6)  Employees should ensure their footwear is clean, and the rungs are not slippery.

6.7)  Employees should always have one person footing the ladder at all times. 

6.8)  Employees should keep children away from ladders and guard if necessary. 

6.9)  Employees should not over-reach; move the ladder. 

6.10)  Employees should keep both feet on the ladder at all times. 

6.11)  Employees should not throw items from the ladder to the ground. 

6.12)  Employees should always face the ladder when going up and down. 

6.13)  When carrying a ladder, employees should wear protective equipment i.e. hard hat, gloves etc. 

6.14)  Employees should beware of any overhead cables. 

6.15)  Employees should always get assistance to raise double and triple ladders. 

6.16)  Extending ladders need an overlap of at least three rungs. 

6.17)  Employees must wear a hard hat at all times, whilst on a ladder or in the vicinity of one. 

7.  Vehicle Safety.

7.1)  All persons who have the use of company vehicles must use them in accordance with the legislation that is current at the time, including the Tachograph and Driving Hours Regulations. 

7.2)  Employees should always drive in a safe courteous manner. 

7.3)  Employees MUST not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. 

7.4)  Employees should always ensure all doors of the vehicle are closed before starting the engine and maneuvering.  They should concentrate on what’s going on around them. 

7.5)  Employees should always check the load before moving off.  They should never manoeuvre from parked, stationary position when pedestrians are within 2 meters of the vehicle. 

7.6)  Employees should adhere to road speed limits. 

7.7)  Employees should never tailgate the vehicle in front. 

7.8)  Employees should always check before reversing.

TERMS  AND  CONDITIONS

These conditions explain the rights, obligations, and responsibilities of all parties to this Agreement.  Where we use the word ‘you’ or ‘your’ it means the Customer: ‘we’, ‘us’ or ‘our’ means the Remover.  These terms and conditions can be varied or amended subject to prior written agreement.  Your attention is drawn to Clauses 8, 9, 10, and 11 which limit our liability and you should therefore consider specialist insurance to cover your goods or premises.  We are able to arrange such insurance on your behalf.  This insurance will form a separate Agreement between you and the Insurers and separate conditions will apply.
